AKRONWest Nile detectedAKRON: The city of Akron said Wednesday that six mosquitoes recently caught in traps have tested positive for the West Nile virus.They were captured on the following streets: one each on Easton Drive, Auten Drive, Glendale Avenue and Weathervane Lane, and two at an intersection of Onondago and Morningview avenues.Health officials say the mosquitoes are not necessarily dangerous but can be annoying to people and pets.For more information, call the Summit County Health District at 330-923-8856.Also on Wednesday, the Canton Health Department announced the discovery of West Nile mosquitoes in the area of Trump and Georgetown Road NE. The city plans to spray in the area to combat the problem.Driver robbedAKRON: Akron police say a driver for Elite Meats reported he was robbed at gunpoint at the intersection of East South and Sherman streets about 8 p.m. Tuesday.The 19-year-old driver told investigators that two males armed with handguns approached his truck and demanded money.The driver drove to a gas station at Grant and East South streets and called for help. Second victimAKRON: Akron police say a second victim in the 12:30 a.m. shooting near Grace Avenue and Copley Road showed up Tuesday afternoon at Akron Children’s Hospital.A 20-year-old Sunset View Drive man arrived at the hospital around 4 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his foot. He was later transported to Akron General Medical Center for treatment.The first victim, a 19-year-old Storer Avenue man, arrived at Akron General shortly after the early Tuesday morning shooting with a chest wound. He was taken to the hospital by a group of friends.Detectives are still investigating the case.Robber sentencedAKRON: A 48-year-old Akron man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday.Thomas Witcher was found guilty in July of kidnapping and robbing a high school student who had given him a ride.Summit County Common Pleas Judge Thomas Teodosio imposed the sentence.According to prosecutors, Witcher approached a St. Vincent-St. Mary High school student at the BP station at Merriman Road and Portage Path and said his car broke down at the Circle K on Portage Trail.He told the student he didn’t know the area, his father was dying and asked for a ride to his car.As they approached the Circle K, Witcher pulled out a gun and demanded that the student drive him to another location and later took the student’s iPod.Hospital eventAKRON: Friends of Akron Children’s Hospital’s Harness Race Rally, a major fundraiser for the hospital, continues to be popular among men and women.The grand prizes are a major draw for the event, which dates back to 1962.This year’s event, Friday at Northfield Park, has as its grand prize a Volkswagen Jetta donated by Dave Walters BMW Volkswagen. The raffle winner for the car and six other prizes will be drawn that evening. All proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets, which are still $1, will benefit the hospital’s Rehabilitative Services. The agency each day sees nearly 300 patients in the areas of physical, occupational, speech and other therapies.“It’s our aim to raise $100,000,” said Rosemarie George, event founder and this year’s chairperson. “That’s a long away from the little more than $5,000 we raised our first year. Their vote sends contract talks to binding arbitration.There was no discussion on why the council objected to the proposal, but the report of fact-finder William Binning indicated there are widespread differences on several issues, including health care, work rules, vacations and holidays.In other action, the council awarded Northstar Asphalt of Jackson Township a $627,897 contract to resurface three sections of South Arlington Road, including the area being widened in the vicinity of the intersection of Arlington and East Turkeyfoot Lake Road (state Route 619).KENTLand swapKENT: The Kent State board of trustees will consider a land swap with the city of Kent at a special meeting this morning in Columbus.Trustees will be at Ohio State University for the Board of Regents’ annual statewide meeting of trustees at the 14 tax-supported universities.KSU will give the city a half-acre site west of Depeyster Street that it needs for the ongoing downtown redevelopment project.The city will give KSU a little more than a half-acre of property the university will use to extend the esplanade, the walkway that will lead from the university to the downtown redevelopment.The university said the properties will be exchanged at face value with no additional cost to either party.STARK COUNTYRoad workCANTON: Improvements to North Prospect Avenue in Hartville should be completed by the end of the year under terms of a contract Stark County commissioners awarded Wednesday.Central Allied Enterprises had the successful bid for the job at $522,856.The project will cover 1,400 feet from the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway tracks north to a curve in the road. Work will include storm sewers, sanitary sewers, curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Specifications include a rubberized track crossing that is expected to be smoother than the current surface.Commissioners awarded the bid because the project is aided by $155,000 from the county’s federal Community Development Block Grant. Other funding comes from the Ohio Public Works Commission, the Stark County Transportation Improvement District and the village.Work on the project started in 2010, but was stopped when a promised grant from the local committee administering OPWC funds was found to be unavailable.SUMMIT COUNTYShred documentsGREEN: Free shredding of paper documents will be available to Summit County residents from 9 a.m. till noon Saturday.The event will be at Green’s Central Administration Building, 1755 Town Park Blvd.Service Director Randy Monteith said participants are permitted to bring a maximum of 10 bags or boxes of paper to the event.
